A low-res demake of Friday Night Funkin' made in PICO-8 for Pico Day 2021.
PICO NIGHT PUNKIN’ is a game made in PICO-8 and fits entirely within it’s limitations. PICO-8 is a fantasy game console (akin to the Commodore 64) which has a 128x128 resolution, 16 colors, 4 channels of sound, and a 32kb limit on the size of the game’s code, sprites, and music. The game was made for Pico Day 2021, a yearly event on Newgrounds celebrating Tom Fulp’s character “Pico”.
I made all of the music and programming for the game, with all of the game’s art being done by Chris West. The game was also made in only 3 days which is a testament to how much we were able to get done in such a short amount of time (especially given all the limitations we had to wrestle with).
Each song in the game fits into it’s own cart with some carts sharing multiple spritesheets loaded in code while fitting within token and character limits. The game’s source code can be found on GitHub and many people have created their own mods of the game which can be found here.
I wrote a blog post about 6 months after the game’s release detailing some of the technical challenges I faced while making the game and while adding additional content through Halloween and Christmas updates.
